A new home for people with autism, who have trouble seeing, hearing, and interacting with the world around them, opened its doors to the public for free last week.
The New York-based organization, which calls itself Big Hit, is known for its large-scale productions, including the upcoming feature film “The Grand Budapest Hotel,” starring Will Smith.
Now, its open to anyone with autism who wants to watch it without a movie ticket.
The event, which took place over three days, attracted around 3,000 people.
For a person with autism with visual impairments, the experience might be difficult, but it’s still better than having a movie theater in the middle of nowhere.
For some with autism and their families, the event could also help ease the transition to the world of entertainment.
For others, the theater was just a way to enjoy the film without the hassle of being physically present.
For the film’s director and co-writer, Matt Damon, the movie is meant to be seen for the first time.
But even though the theater is free, Damon said it’s important to keep the movie’s audience aware that they’re in a movie.
“The movie’s not for everyone, and the people who are interested in it aren’t interested in watching it for themselves,” Damon said.
“We want them to understand that they have to take part in it.
And we’re not interested in making the movie for them.”
“I think what we’re trying to do is get people to know that it’s not a movie that is just for them,” Damon added.
“It’s something they can experience and participate in, and be in the world with.”
For people who live with autism or with visual impairment, the New York City-based charity hopes to expand its program into other cities, like Los Angeles, and beyond.
“If you’re not a member of Big Hit or if you’re just interested in seeing it for yourself, you’re welcome to come,” said Big Hit’s founder, Matt Bowerman.
“You’ll get to see it for free and see it as a movie, and we’ll do a good job of telling the story of what it’s like to have a visual impairment and how it affects you.”
If you or someone you know has a disability that can’t be easily explained or explained through movies, there’s also the Big Hit Autism Center, which was established to assist people with disabilities in finding new and exciting ways to participate in entertainment.
“As a disability advocate, you want to give back to the community,” said Jennifer Liss-Riordan, a former director of Big Play, the charity’s entertainment center.
“A lot of the time, people can’t really talk about how their life has changed because of a disability, and so they have this blank slate where they’re just like, ‘Oh, this is my life.'”
But the biggest benefit of having the film available to everyone is the people with a disability who may not be able to watch or enjoy it themselves.
“I’ve heard stories of people that have come out and said, ‘I want to be there, because I want to see the movie,’ ” Liss.
“They’re like, I want you to see my disability, because it’s the best.”
